Today starts the third December of being part of the Tracking Wonder Quest Groups. It's a wild bunch of creative thinkers working out loud to figure out professional plans for the coming year. It's definitely NOT strategic-planning- as-usual. (Which is why I blog here vs. on my Foghound or Rebels at Work sites; I don't want potential clients to freak out seeing my work in progress.)
This year author and NPR "On Being" host Krista Tippet kicks off the 2017 quest with this prompt:
What is your vocation, your sense of callings as a human being at this point in your life, both in and beyond job and title. Honor the creative value of "how" you are present as much as in "what" you are doing. #yourtruecalling
I wish I were a dam builder
This year the beavers built one huge, messy dam upstream from our pond. Some neighborhood teenagers tried to take it apart so that the pond levels would rise high enough for decent fishing. Despite a summer day of hard work, the kids would go back the next morning and find that the beavers had not only put the dam back together again -- but they had made it even more formidable.
Oh those beavers. Clear and unwavering in their purpose. Efficient and diligent. Tenacious and team players. Oh that I could be a dam builder like them, following instructions from elders, taking pleasure in mastery, and making things built to last.
But, dam I'm a channel in all its forms
But I am a channel. In all its definitions.
I am a channel connecting bodies of water. Did you know that changes in the geometry of a channel can impact stream velocity and discharge? I spot flow and velocity changes in relationships, organizations, teams, and communities sooner than most and am able to find the true cause of the problem. (Note: It's often industrious, well-meaning executive beavers so intent on the work that they don't know what's happening downstream.) I open up new ways for people to safely reach their destinations and goals.
I am a radio and television channel, detecting frequencies that are often missed by human hearing and transmitting signals in ways that are powerful enough to reach people. I am a writer, a facilitator of conversations that matter, a rebel-rousing speaker.
I am a psychic channel, picking up and communicating information about the soul of life and work. Part messenger, part intuitive, I can sense the "vibe" and energy of situations in my gut, providing encouragement on when to take chances and warnings on when to beware. A few years ago a large ad agency paid me a HUGE amount of money for one week's work to help them try to keep a big client. I walked into their office and knew from the environment that they had no chance. They lost the account, most of the executive team resigned within a year, and the agency was sold within two years. I wasn't surprised.
The beavers move with slow and steady purpose.
I let the frequencies move me.
